In 2001, Australia arrived in the Indian shores having won their previous 15 Test matches. The visitors won the series opener comfortably. Under Steve Waugh‘s leadership, that Australian team had every aspect covered and were without a doubt the best in the world. Australia had also dominated the first two days of the second Test, which was being played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. But, soon the tide shifted towards India.

The tourists had batted first and scored 445 on the back of their skipper’s century. India, unfortunately, folded for 171 runs in the first innings. With a lead of 274 runs, Waugh decided to ask the hosts to follow-on. However, what happened after this changed the dimension the Indian cricket forever.

In the second innings, India batted and batted and kept batting longer than anyone would have imagined. VVS Laxman scored his highest Test score of 281 runs. In fact, it was also the highest individual score by any Indian batsman in Test cricket then. Rahul Dravid scored 180 runs. The pair put up a huge partnership and in fact batted the entire day four of the Test. India finally declared on 657 on the final day to set a mammoth target of 384-run target for Australia.

Rahul Dravid, Sachin and Ganguly celebrated to the fullest

Harbhajan Singh who had already picked up seven wickets in the first innings including a hat-trick, picked up six wickets in the second innings to deliver a memorable win for India who won the game from nowhere by 171 runs. This was only the third occasion when a team had won a Test match after being enforced a follow-on.

Back then, Sourav Ganguly was a young captain and what transpired in the next years made Indian cricket what it is today. Experts often refer to this Test match as the turning point in the Indian cricket history. Recently, an unseen old video was shared by a fan.

In the video, the Indian players could be seen celebrating after the Kolkata Test win. Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly are seen opening champagne bottles to celebrate the win with the entire team. After coming across the video, Ganguly himself also reacted recalling the historic victory. “What a win”, Ganguly tweeted recalling the old days.

India went on beat Australia in the third Test match of the series in Chennai. They won the series 2-1 and claimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
