The Indian Test team is scheduled to play the historic Test match against Afghanistan later this month and they’re struggling with injury problems. Their captain Virat Kohli who had opted out of the game is down with an injury and had to cancel his county plans, wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha was also ruled out of the encounter and the selectors had to name Dinesh Karthik as his replacement for the one-off match.

This is Karthik’s redemption at prime. He has been a regular feature in the limited-overs team for the last one year and consistent performances there helped him edge past Parthiv Patel. It was the Gujarat cricketer who was flown in as a backup for Saha when the Indian team toured South Africa. However, Patel’s ordinary show and the fact that Karthik is just getting better with every game worked in his favour.

While Karthik would be gearing up for the upcoming challenge he received a special message from the CEO of his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, Venky Mysore.

Venky congratulated DK on being called back into the Indian Test side. He mentioned that getting there on the back of his hard work and performance is the best thing for a guy like him.

“Heartiest congrats DK for being recalled to the India test side! Glad sheer hard work & performance has been noticed. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy!! #rooting4uSkipper! @DineshKarthik @KKRiders,” he tweeted.

DK was also included in the Test side on the tour of South Africa as a backup for Patel, however, he wasn’t a part of the XI. The match against Afghanistan will be his first Test since January 2010. It is an important match also because the national selectors will soon decide upon the Test squad for the tour of England.

If Karthik delivers at par with expectations he will be the first choice for the overseas tours as well. There is a line of experts who feel the Tamil Nadu cricketer has an edge over Saha given the fact that he is a better batter and the team will need that in England and Australia.
