There is a growing worry in the Indian cricketing fraternity over MS Dhoni‘s replacement, especially in the ODIs, after he retires. While Rishabh Pant is looking the favourite to nail down the position at the moment, Ishan Kishan is also not far behind. He led Jharkhand to the semi-final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy and were unbeaten until losing to Delhi in a thrilling game. Moreover, Ishan also displayed smart wicket-keeping skills during the tournament and one such instance was on show during the game against Delhi.

Jharkhand posted a meagre total of 199 runs in fifty overs after being invited to bat first thanks to a decent knock from Virat Singh who held the innings together. In response, Delhi got off to a flyer as Unmukt Chand scored a flurry of boundaries after which they lost wickets in a hurry. Anand Singh bowled well as they were left struggling at 83/3 in the 18th over and Gautam Gambhir‘s wicket had brought Jharkhand back in the game.

Ishan Kishan’s brilliant work

Delhi needed a partnership between Himmat Singh and Nitish Rana but the former was caught napping out of the crease thanks to some really smart work from Ishan Kishan. In the 20th over, Himmat missed a wide delivery from Anand which was collected by Jharkhand skipper cleanly who was up to the stumps to prevent the batsman from charging at the bowler.

Kishan waited for a split second after collecting the ball and quickly whipped off the bails as the Himmat looked to relax by lifting his back leg off the ground. He appealed in delight as the batsman didn’t have a clue of what happened and the replays clearly showed that Himmat’s leg was in the air when the bails were off their groove. Delhi was in further trouble with this wicket as Ishan Kishan was congratulated by his teammates for affecting a smart dismissal.

Though Jharkhand lost the close game by just two wickets, Ishan’s captaincy was hailed by many during the tournament and he will surely be on the selectors’ radar in the near future.
