The ICC World Cup 2019 will start from May 30 in England and Wales and will see the top 10 teams in ODI cricket battling for the chance to be called World Champions. The Indian team is considered to be one of the favorites to win the tournament and BCCI will announce the 15-man squad on April 15.

Given that most of the places in the Indian squad are more or less filled, there has been only one big debate, who will bat at no.4 spot in the playing XI as the team is yet to identify that batsmen, despite trying a plethora of players at that spot. MS Dhoni, Manish Pandey, Ambati Rayudu, Ajinkya Rahane, Dinesh Karthik, Vijay Shankar, and Shreyas Iyer are just some of the names that have tried their luck at the position. But apart from Rayudu, none of them have managed to seal their place

Recently, the former India captain Sourav Ganguly had thrown a spanner in proceedings by suggesting a name that was clearly left field. He suggested that Saurashtra’s Cheteshwar Pujara should be tried at the position, given his calmness and technical acumen, which might come in handy in the moving and swinging conditions in England.

Middle-order needs solidity

“See, I am going to say something that might not sound believable to many viewers and a lot of people might laugh at my suggestion. But for me, Cheteshwar Pujara should be India’s No. 4 in ODIs. His fielding might be a bit weak but he is a very good batsman. I know people will be shocked by my claim but if you want a quality batsman who is better than the options India has tried of late, I think Pujara is the best choice,” Ganguly told India TV.

Now Vinod Kambli has taken to Twitter to express his views on the subject and stated that “There is less than a week to go for the @cricketworldcup squad to be announced for #TeamIndia. For me, @cheteshwar1 should be the one anchoring the Number 4 spot. The middle order needs solidity and we need someone to encounter swing and play a sheet anchor’s role.”

To bring to notice, Pujara has just played five ODIs for India without much success and last wore the blue jersey way back in 2014. Ganguly had said that though Pujara’s fielding might be a hindrance to the team, his batting more than makes up for it.
