The Indian Premier League (IPL) serves as a melting point of diverse cricketing cultures and this year, with the ICC World Cup lined up after the T20 carnival, the focus on players is even more intense. India are at the threshold of announcing their squad for the WC and that has made both the experts and fans speculating over the fates of a number of probables. Foreign former players coaching IPL franchises are also expressing their opinions over Indian players who should make it to the squad and former India cricketer Vinod Kambli is not too impressed with it.

Ponting backed Pant for WC; Kallis supported Karthik

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting and former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis, who are coaching IPL franchises like Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), respectively, have recently spoken in favour of players like Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik. While Ponting backed the DC wicket-keeper-batsman to be picked for the Indian squad, Kallis recently said that India will err in not selecting Karthik, also a gloveman and captain of the KKR, for the WC. Even Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene said before the beginning of IPL 2019 on March 23 that the Indian team management should worry less about Jasprit Bumrah’s workload and wanted him to play and not rest at home because of the WC.

In a tweet, Kambli, who had scored a hundred in the 1996 World Cup, said the Indian cricket board (BCCI) has able selectors and officials who can choose the right squad and asked the Indian coaches to stay away from the selection procedure of the Indian team. The advices of the likes of Ponting and Kallis certainly did not go down well with him.

The Indian squad for the WC is expected to be announced on April 15. So far, only New Zealand have announced their squad for the mega event starting May 30 when hosts England will take on South Africa. India will play South Africa in their first match on June 5.
