Cricket’s guilty pleasure is watching the batsmen hit sixes, especially big ones which go soaring over the boundary ropes. That is the reason people love the T20 format of cricket, as you see batsmen like Chris Gayle, Chris Lynn, AB de Villiers and others who can clear the rope with ease. In international cricket, only two men have hit six sixes in an over. Herschelle Gibbs of South Africa hit six sixes in an over against Holland in ICC World Cup 2007 and Yuvraj Singh of India hit six sixes in an over against England in the ICC World T20 2007.
Local boy from Mumbai hits seven sixes in seven balls
Something similar was seen when a local boy from Virar, Mumbai emulated the records of these great batsmen and even went one better. 23-year-old Makarand Patil from Mumbai suburb of Virar hit seven sixes in seven balls during a match between Viva Supermarkets and Mahindra Logistics in the F division Times Shield tournament at the Sachin Tendulkar Gymkhana in Mumbai.
Batting at number eight, Patil slammed a quick 84 runs from 26 balls which included six sixes in an over and a seventh on the seventh ball he faced and ensured that his team clinched the F Division title. His achievement came in a Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) banner tournament and at a ground where MCA holds his Indian board junior age group games.
“Till I hit the fourth six, I didn’t think that I will score six sixes in that over. My teammates kept cheering, I could hear the loud noise when I hit the sixth six. I was over the moon. And later when I faced the seventh ball, I hit that too for a six. It’s a great feeling to be like a star for one day,” Patil was quoted saying by Indian Express.
“People are still coming to meet me. They are greeting me. The feeling is good but life ahead will not be easy again. I will have to work harder than before. My first aim is to get in the reckoning for the Mumbai team in future,” the Sainath Club player further added.
Patil works for Viva Supermarkets as a salesman and joins the ranks of Yuvraj Singh and Ravi Shastri in achieving the feat of hitting six sixes in an over in a cricket match.
