Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee believes that Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s captaincy style is similar to Ricky Ponting. Lee, who is known for his aggressive fast bowling, played a major part of his career under Tasmanian. Ponting, arguably, the greatest Australian batsman after Don Bradman is known as a phenomenal leader too. The three-time World Cup winner is renowned for his ‘lead from the front’ attitude.

According to the veteran pacer, Virat Kohli and Ricky Ponting have always deployed a bold mindset and the former, much like the latter, go for the kill. Lee added that both like taking that extra fraction of risk for the team, which, at times, serves as the difference between gaining a victory and losing.

Both the skippers have enjoyed getting the responsibility a lot. First has taken his game to another level after taking the reins from MS Dhoni. The former Australian captain was always the highest averaging batsman of the whole team when he took the leadership role. Kohli has scored 70 centuries in international cricket, whereas ‘Punter’ is placed at 71.

“If you see Ricky Ponting and Virat Kohli, you could say there are some similarities between their captaincy styles. They’ve got that raw aggression, but it’s not necessarily over the top. Apart from his (Kohli) captaincy, he does well with the bat personally. He is the same as Ricky Ponting. He had that real powerful aggression but not too much. There’s a nice balance, I think. They are pretty similar when it comes to captaincy. And also, they’ve got a great ability to read the players. So, you think about Ponting the way he had set the fields, very attacking fields, I see the same In Kohli. Kohli is happy to attack,” Brett Lee told Times of India.

MS Dhoni still has so much to offer: Brett Lee

The cricketer further said that Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the former Indian captain still has a lot to offer for his country. According to him, the Jharkhand lad is a great leader and can still be the captain or a deputy. Dhoni who has not played international cricket from the last 13 months is still to announce his future plans.

“I think there is definitely more to see of MS Dhoni. He still has so much to offer. He’s that cool character, he could be a captain again, he’s the guy that can be a great vice-captain. He doesn’t even need a captain. He’s just a great leader amongst the team. And everyone that knows Dhoni knows that he’s a wonderful guy, such a generous person,” he added.
