Indian skipper Virat Kohli could not have asked for a worse end to 2020 on the cricket field. While India are to play one more Test this year, the first Test of the ongoing four-match Test series against Australia in Adelaide is his last of the year. After the conclusion of the match, the 32-year old is set to return home to attend the birth of his first child.

Anushka Sharma is due to give birth to the couple’s first child in early January. And it is safe to say that Kohli would have wanted to leave Australia on a better note. Playing his last innings of the series as well as 2020, he was out for just 4 in the second innings of the Adelaide Test. The failure means Kohli has ended 2020 without a century in any format.

The India batting star had hit at least one century in a calendar year since 2009. Kohli played three Tests this year (two against New Zealand, one against Australia) and managed to score just one fifty in six innings. That fifty came in the first innings of the Adelaide Test when he scored 74 before being run-out after a mix-up.

Kohli’s last century in international cricket as well as Tests came in November last year when he scored 136 against Bangladesh during the historic day-night Test at the Eden Gardens. It was India’s first-ever day-night Test. The century drought means Kohli has gone an incredible 392 days without scoring a century in international cricket.

India’s disastrous display

India came up with a disastrous batting display in the Adelaide Test as they were all out for just 36 to register their lowest score in Tests. The previous lowest total for India was 42 which came against England in 1974. Not a single batsman managed to touch the double-digit mark with Mayank Agarwal’s 9 being the highest score.

For the hosts, Josh Hazlewood was the star with the ball as he picked up 5 wickets for just 8 runs while Pat Cummins picked up 4 wickets. Both the teams will play three more Tests before India return home and prepare for the home series against England. Kohli will return to action again with the resumption of the home season.
