The legendary Shivaji Park Gymkhana (SPG) in Mumbai felicitated Indian skipper Virat Kohli on Saturday (February 4) for his contribution to Indian cricket. Virat arrived at the Gymkhana located in Dadar area of the city around 11.30 am in the morning SPG Assistant General Secretary Sunil Ramchandran was quoted by PTI as saying.

The 28-year-old recently took over the captaincy reins in limited-overs cricket from his predecessor MS Dhoni and with that is now the captain in all the three formats of the game. He led the team to success in their first ODI series as well as T20I series as the Men in Blue beat England by a 2-1 margin in the respective series’.

Virat was felicitated by Gymkhana Chairman Avinash Kamat, Ramchandran and committee member Sanil Samel. Over the years SPG has given Indian cricket some of the greatest servants in the form of the legend Sunil Gavaskar, Ajit Wadekar, former skipper Sandeep Patil, Sanjay Manjrekar, Praveen Amre and the most recent being allrounder Ajit Agarkar.

Team India has always relied on cricketers from Mumbai as some of the greatest players who have ever represented the national team have emerged from the city. Who can be a better example than Sachin Tendulkar. In the current set-up limited-overs opener Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane represent the legacy of Mumbai cricket in the Indian team.

A lot of people gathered at the Shivaji Park after the news of Virat being there spread around. The cricketer would, of course, take a lot of pride in being felicitated at a place where he has no connection with and which has produced someone like Gavaskar who he holds in high regards.
