Just around a year ago, Virat Kohli and his teammates made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Despite being the number one Test side, India fared poorly in South Africa and lost the Test series 2-1. A few months later, they ended up losing another overseas Test series when England thrashed them 4-1. But the Indians seem to have learned their lessons from those two defeats and it finally paid off on Monday.

Virat Kohli & Co. beat Australia 2-1 in the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy to register a historic Test series win in Australia and wipe off the painful memories from the past. It is India’s first-ever Test series win in Australia. Prior to the recently-concluded series, India had visited Australia 11 times since the first tour in 1948 but never managed to beat the hosts. The long wait finally came to an end on Monday after the fourth Test ended in a tame draw due to poor weather.

India looked set to win the series 3-1 but rain and bad light on the last three days of the game meant the visitors did not get to bowl their full quota of overs. After piling up 622 for 7 in the first innings, India bowled out the hosts for just 300 before asking them to follow-on. In reply, Australia were 6 for no loss on the fourth day before the umpires asked the players to walk off the field due to bad light. The players never returned thereafter before the game was officially called off on the fifth day.

A proud captain:

Following the historic triumph, Virat took to Twitter and expressed his utter delight on achieving the incredible feat. He also said that he was proud to be a part of this team while making it clear that the team is no mood to stop, he wrote- “So proud to be a part of this team, great feeling! 😇 This is not just a team this is a family. 😊 Onwards and upwards from here on. 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳 @BCCI”

India’s next assignment, meanwhile, is the upcoming three-match ODI series against the same opposition. The series gets underway on January 12 in Sydney.
