The Indian Football Team led by Sunil Chhetri became the Intercontinental Champions on Sunday as they defeated Kenya by 2-0 in the Final of the tournament. The captain led from the front as he scored both the goals in front of the jam-packed crowd as the Men in Blue triumphed in the title clash. However, the captain of the Indian cricket team Virat Kohli has lauded the Football team now for their stellar performance and believed that it was a much-needed boost for the sport in the country.

A few days ago, Sunil Chhetri had posted a humble video on Twitter and had requested the fans to come to the Stadium and support the team. He had promised the fans to put an excellent show in the tournament but had also pointed out that they need motivation from the fans. His post went viral on social media and the result was three sold-out matches of India. Kohli was the first to urge the Indian sports lovers to back the Indian football team after which many current and former cricketers raised their voice.

The whole country was waiting for the Indian team to be crowned as Champions and they didn’t disappoint the fans. The captain himself made the difference by scoring two goals and also equalled the Lionel Messi in terms of the most international goals amongst the active players. He is now joint second on the list with 64 goals and only Cristiano Ronaldo is ahead of him.

Kohli was delighted after witnessing a superb performance from the team and hailed them for their efforts. “Champions!!!! Another stellar performance from our captain @chetrisunil11 and the entire team last night. This will surely provide a much-needed boost for @IndianFootball. Keep up the spirit boys. #INDvKEN,” he tweeted. Earlier, Chhetri had also thanked all the fans for turning out in huge numbers and hoped that the support continues.
