Virat Kohli had a dream start to his Indian Test captaincy tenure, winning 14 out of 22 matches while drawing out six of them. Kohli’s only defeat came at the hands of Australia in Australia and later against Sri Lanka in the Island nation. In his short career as the captain so far, Kohli has gathered numerous silverwares against some of the top teams.

The current Indian captain in all three formats, Kohli has now set a record he won’t be too proud of after England beat India in the 1st T20I match at Kanpur by 7 wickets. Kohli became the first Indian to lose his debut match as captain in all of the three formats. The dynamic cricketer lost his debut Test match as captain against Australia during the 4-Test match series in the year 2015 at Adelaide.

He then led the Indian side for the first time in limited-overs cricket against Sri Lanka during the tri-nation series in West Indies in the year 2013. India lost that game by 161 runs after Sri Lanka posted a mammoth 348 on the board. And today he registered an unwanted treble after losing the 1st T20I as the skipper of the side.

Apart from Kohli, Stephen Fleming (New Zealand), Shaun Pollock (South Africa), Tillakaratne Dilshan (Sri Lanka), Brendon McCullum (New Zealand), Hamilton Masakadza ( Zimbabwe) and Graeme Cremer (Zimbabwe) too have lost their debut match as captain across the three formats.

It isn’t all dim for the poster boy of Indian cricket. Last year, Kohli became the third captain to score three double centuries in a year, after Michael Clarke (2012) and Brendon McCullum (2014). Kohli also averages 65.50 in Tests as captain, only next to Australia’s Don Bradman staggering 101.51 (minimum 2000-plus Test runs).

Kohli’s men will be facing England next in the 2nd T20I match against England at the VCA stadium, Nagpur. India will look to level the series before heading to the 3rd and final T20I game at Bangalore.
