As the Indian skipper Virat Kohli walked-in to bat at Number 3 while India was chasing a mammoth target of 375 runs, the viewers had high hopes of witnessing a masterclass from the Chase Master in the opening game of the three-match ODI series against Australia in Sydney. However, all were left disappointed as Virat failed to live up to his reputation and managed just 21 runs.

In his short innings of 21 runs in 21 balls, Kohli served the viewers with utmost entertainment as he played some delightful strokes. The Indian star had a torrid start as he could score only 1 run off six deliveries when Australia had a chance to send him back to the pavilion. In the seventh over, Kohli top-edged a delivery by Pat Cummins towards the fine-led where Adam Zampa was standing.

It was an easy catch but Zampa failed to take the big wicket as the ball passed through his hands before landing on the field. This mistake could have proved very costly for the hosts and Kohli made sure to rub salt on the wounds of the Australian team by hitting two cracking fours in the same over.

Apart from two fours, Virat had also smashed an audacious maximum in his knock. The six by the Indian skipper can be arguably considered as the best shot of the day. In the second ball of the ninth over, Cummins didn’t get the right length and Kohli played a flick shot to send the ball to the stands. It was a pure beauty by the Indian captain as he brilliantly executed a bottom-handed flick over backward square-leg.

Virat Kohli loses his wicket to Josh Hazlewood

Kohli’s innings came to an end in the very next over as Josh Hazlewood bowled a short ball and Kohli went through the pull only to be caught by the Australian captain Aaron Finch at short mid-wicket. Finch didn’t repeat the mistakes of Zampa and neatly completed the catch.

Kohli’s dismissal initiated a collapse of the middle-order as he was soon followed by Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul who scored 2 and 12 runs respectively. India went on to lose by 66 runs, in the end, to give Australia a 1-0 lead in the ODI series.
