Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli has suggested the name of former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori for the post of the head coach of the Indian national team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has begun its hunt to find the next coach for team India. The post is vacant since Duncan Fletcher ended his contract last year.
Ravi Shastri has been accompanying the team since then as the team manager. Now, as per the sources confirmed to the TOI, the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli has suggested Vettori’s name for the elite post. However, there has been no confirmation from the BCCI end about the same.
Vettori is currently coaching the Royal Challengers Bangalore side in the IPL and is also the coach of Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League. So when it comes to experience, the Kiwi spinner is no short on it. He had recently replaced Stuart Law as the head coach of the Brisbane side in the BBL and signed a 3-year contract. So in case the BCCI goes ahead with Kohli’s suggestion, Vettori will have to find a way out to relinquish his BBL duties.
The coach-captain duo of Vettori and Kohli has a great mutual admiration. Recently, the name of former Indian batsman Rahul Dravid was also tipped as the fore-runner for the post. However, the batting legend had then quoted that he will have to weigh all his options before coming to a conclusion. “Any decision that I make at this stage of my life would depend on whether I have the bandwidth to do all of these things,” Dravid had quoted.
