India played competitive cricket throughout in their recently concluded Test series against England but eventually slumped to a 1-4 defeat after their drubbing in the final encounter at Kennington Oval in London, which they lost by 118 runs. Barring the match at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, the visiting team had ample opportunities to comprehensively pin their opponents.

Unfortunately, they let go of most of the chances and allowed the Three Lions to keep making comebacks. In the first Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham, India couldn’t chase down a moderate target of 194 runs. However, Virat Kohli’s men stormed back with a 203-run victory at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, a venue where they won after Rahul Dravid led the side to glory back in 2007.

A lot of work to do for India

Even at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton, India had their moments, however, the Brits turned out to be a tad more powerful. Yet another time, the visitors faltered in their run chase and lost by 60 runs. The last match was a dead rubber, but the likes of KL Rahul and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant showed that India aren’t short of potential and firepower by any stretch of the imagination.

India’s next overseas assignment is against Australia from November where they are scheduled to play three T20Is, four Tests and three ODIs. In the meantime, Virender Sehwag, the former Indian captain, reckons that the visiting team was inconsistent owing to which they couldn’t overturn Joe Root’s men. The Nawab of Najafgarh also mentioned that India need to work hard ahead of their Australia tour.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “Congratulations England on the 4-1 series win. India were good in patches, but not consistent enough with the bat. Pant & Rahul’s display on last day was very heartening, so were Kohli’s & the bowlers consistency throughout . Need to work a lot to travel better. Ab MissionAustralia.”
