Former India batsman Virender Sehwag’s career as an explosive batsman has been closely followed by a ‘career’ in creative and hilarious tweets. The opener, arguably one of the best in the world, abided by a ‘see ball, hit ball’ policy when out in the middle, be it in T20s or Tests.

On October 20 Viru celebrated his 40th birthday and wishes poured in for him from the entire cricketing fraternity. After all, this was a batsman who had entertained spectators the world over with the disdain with which he treated bowlers. And let’s not forget his jubilant figure on the field, one who hummed popular Hindi songs before flicking balls over the fence.

Sourav Ganguly was the captain of the Indian Cricket Team, under whose tutelage the likes of Sehwag have grown to dominate world cricket. Sehwag made his international debut in 1999 in an ODI against Pakistan. But it didn’t take him long to establish himself as a feared opener who nonchalantly smashed bowlers to the boundary ropes.

Ganguly has often been credited for taking players like Sehwag under his wings and nurturing them into world class cricketers. The duo stitched a record-breaking partnership of 192 runs which not only became India’s best for the first wicket against England, but also the highest by any team for any wicket against the Englishmen in limited-overs internationals.

Viru – always indebted to Sourav Ganguly

Sehwag has also described how Dada sacrificed his opening spot for him, following which the former experienced unprecedented success in international cricket and became a force to reckon with. He’s always expressed his gratitude towards Sourav Ganguly for the opportunities he was given and did quite the same while replying to the former skipper’s birthday wishes.

Ganguly had earlier in the day tweeted, “Viru sir @virendersehwag happy birthday”, to which the birthday boy replied with a great sense of humour, creativity and humility, “Dada Sir app hain. Main toh pair. Thank you for your wishes. Love” which loosely translates to, “Dada, you are the head, I am just the feet”.

Sehwag thus acknowledged Ganguly’s contributions in shaping what went on to become one of the most entertaining careers of world cricket.
