After a team’s victory, the players are appreciated for their brilliant performances on the field. However, the man behind the scenes- the coach-doesn’t receive as many accolades as that of the players. Nevertheless, the trend seems to have changed after the recently concluded Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.
The Boys in Blue were stupendous throughout the tournament and remained unbeaten in the six games. Subsequently, they bagged the trophy for the fourth time, the most by any team after Australia, ever since the inception of the tournament. Along with the youngsters, Rahul Dravid also was showered with appreciations from every nook and corner of the country.
Praises for Dravid
Some of them even compared him to Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s character in the movie Chak de India in which the actor failed to win his team as the leader but came back to win the championship as a coach. Most recently, Virender Sehwag lauded the former Indian batsman during a show named ‘Cricket Ki Baat’. “In his 16 or 17 years career, Rahul Dravid never managed to get his hands around the world cup trophy, but as a coach, he has lived that dream with the help of this young U-19 team,” the former India opener said.
The Delhi batsman also highlighted Dravid’s record as a testimony of him being an effective mentor. “Dravid is world’s best coach at the moment and as a player, his records speak for themselves. He prepared his wards for the big game and taught him the nuances to handle the pressure of a big final,” he added.
Rahul Dravid has been one of greatest cricketers to have played the games, rightly so, bearing in mind his records across the globe. Even after retiring, he hasn’t stopped contributing to the game and coached his team to glory, which is heartening, to say the least.
