“The Nawab of Najafgarh” Virender Sehwag has been in the headlines quite often these days for his hilarious tweets on his twitter handle and just like his playing days he has remained the entertaining Sehwag he was, though in a different role. His tweets have been unique and totally out of the box and courtesy his 140+ character jokes on his twitter handle, different brands are now paying him to tweet for their promotion. “I have, in the last six months, made around Rs 30 lakh through my tweets,” Sehwag was quoted as saying the Hindustan Times.

Among other things, Sehwag has been the proud owner of Sehwag International School in the heart of his hometown, Najafgarh which is famous for providing students with the best sporting facilities available in the country.

Sehwag joined twitter just like normal people for having some social media fun. But unlike the majority, Viru’s tweets got wittier and wittier and courtesy his exhilarating tweets Sehwag has now 8 million followers on his microblogging account. Not only has Sehwag gained popularity on twitter, he has spread his territory and has become a humourist on Youtube with a show named “Viru Ke Funde” which covers everything from how to conciliate with your mother-in-law to avoid paying income tax and how to learn English as an adult. His funda for the last read “All cricketers who did not speak English, like Kapil, Harbhajan and I, married women who were fluent in it. In front of them, we were not shy of making mistakes, which helped us learn to speak in that language without getting embarrassed.”

Speaking to the Hindustan Times on how it all happened Sehwag said, “These are all jokes we used to crack with friends and in the dressing room,” says Sehwag about his reinvention as social media royalty. “Once I took to Twitter and shared those jokes, they became a huge hit. My following grew and some of the posts got thousands of retweets. With so many shares, money from sponsors followed.”

Some of his samples of his hilarious jokes are: “Haazme ki Goli, Rangon ki Holi, Gujarat me Ghagra Choli Aur Batting mein Virat Kohli Poore India ko pasand hai #HappyBirthdayVirat @imVkohli.” It clearly shows the hilarious side of Viru. On that same day, he had also posted another tweet which made everyone burst out with laughter. The tweet read; “8 yrs ago we cud have dedicated this day by eating Chikoo. But today, I think all auto/taxis shud start their Meter frm100 #HappyBirthdayVirat.”

Sehwag though gets paid by different brands but he promotes it very carefully giving a hilarious tone to it despite being rational. When Ravindra Jadeja had won the Man of the Match award for his brilliant spell of 7/48 in the final Test against England, Sehwag had said that while everyone was facing problem due to demonetization these days, Jadeja is likely to transfer his money directly to his PAYTM Wallet. His tweet read, “Wah Jaddu Bhai! Hamare paas toh 2000 ke chhutte nahi hai aur aap @Paytm mein 1 Lakh le gaye. Thoda hamare Paytm mein bhi transfer kijiye.” Paytm was the official sponsor for the India-England series.

Coming back to his life story and the struggles he went through Sehwag started by saying that they used to survive on Rs 500 per month as a family and that is from where the journey began for the swashbuckler from Najafgarh. Speaking at length to Hindustan Times Sehwag says, “When I began my life journey, we’d survive on Rs 500 a month as a family. As time passed and I started playing for the country, this Rs 500 multiplied manifold, but it was not the money that mattered, it was the fact that I was fulfilling my ambition of playing cricket on the highest platform, representing my country. That was more satisfying than anything else.”

As we all know Sehwag didn’t chase records and it was quite evident during his whole career. He even missed out on a double century in Australia while attempting a six over mid-on batting on 195. “I never thought of breaking a record. The only ambition I had was to become the fastest century maker for India, which I did when I broke Azharuddin’s record. If I had planned to score double and triple hundreds, I would probably not have made them ever,” he says.

Sehwag who hails from a very small town near Delhi recalls his father’s word who had told him to build a school in his village so that future Sehwag’s are not lost due to the lack of facilities. He kept father’s words and now his school in Delhi which is very close to his village is in blossoming in every way possible and it provides the best sporting facilities. Sehwag doesn’t see his school as a profit making venture and does everything possible for the betterment of the school. “I lose around a couple of crores every year on the school, but even if I was to make profit from it, I would never use it for myself,” he says. “I’d plough every penny back into improving facilities for the school. Just as I do with the cricket academies I run around the country. These are not for making money; for that I have other avenues,” Sehwag said.
