Amit Mishra, the Delhi Capitals’ leg-spinner, was on top of his game in the match against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. He picked up four wickets and conceded only 24 runs in his spell. Subsequently, he also bagged the Player of the Match award as the Delhi-based franchise won the game by six wickets with five balls to spare.
In the meantime, Virender Sehwag, the former Indian cricketer, reckons that Mishra is a happy-go-lucky personality and is one of the ‘favourites’ among his teammates. He also recalled a time with the veteran asked for a salary hike after his maiden hat-trick in the cash-rich tournament.
Amit Mishra bowled really well: Sehwag
“He is the kind of guy who is very calm and talks gently to everybody. He gets to mingle with everyone pretty quickly. So that’s why he becomes the favourite of his teammates. When he gets beaten, other players feel for him. And when takes wickets, all are happy for him.
“I remember when he claimed his first hat-trick. I asked him what do you want and he said ‘Viru Bhai, please get my salary increased.’ Now, I feel, he would be getting that much amount of money that he won’t ask for a raise even after getting another hat-trick,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
Sehwag also lauded Mishra for the game-changing spell of bowling at the Chepauk. In his first over, Suryakumar Yadav laid into him with some big shots, but he made a stupendous comeback. He picked up the wickets of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard and Ishan Kishan to push MI on the backfoot.
“He bowled really well. That’s why he is one of the best bowlers of this tournament. He has the most wickets as a spinner. Had Rohit Sharma played his normal game against him, he could have scored 60-70 runs easily,” Sehwag added.
Mishra played the first game against the Chennai Super Kings but didn’t take the field against Rajasthan Royals. The 38-year-old is amongst the leading wicket-takers in the IPL and he didn’t let his team down on Tuesday night. The Capitals’ next match is against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday, April 25 in Chennai itself.
