‘Want to win a World Cup, one or two or three' - KL Rahul determined to create history

KL Rahul has expressed his wish to ‘create history’ for the Indian cricket team by winning a World Cup. The Indian opener is currently with the team at the T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE. However, his wish isn’t likely to fulfill this year as after two losses upfront, India’s fortunes now hangs in balance. 

Rahul, who is touted as one of the future leaders of the Indian team, has previously played in a 50 overs World Cup in 2019. However, India was knocked out in the semi-finals by New Zealand. In a few interactions, Rahul has expressed how bad he had felt not being able to win that match for India. In a recent interview, he opened up about his desire for winning a World Cup. 

He noted that he watched the 2011 World Cup win in India and that is when he decided that he wanted to win one or even more than that. It is also worth noting that Rahul also took part in the U-19 World Cup in 2010, but India didn’t manage to win that tournament.

“Growing up, I watched the 2011 World Cup at home, that’s when we won the World Cup and things changed for me. From that day on, I was like, this is what I want to do. I want to win a World Cup for my country, win one or two or three and be part of the world cup and create history,” Rahul said in an Instagram reel uploaded by ICC.

So far, Rahul’s tournament has been a bit up and down. Against Pakistan, the 29-year-old scored only three and followed that up with 18 runs against New Zealand. However, he came back strongly against Afghanistan, scoring 69 runs from 48 balls, and was involved in a record opening stand of 140 runs with Rohit Sharma. 

India will be facing Scotland on November 5 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, aiming for a big win. They need to get wins in both their matches, the last one being against Namibia on November 8. Apart from this, they also need to hope that New Zealand loses at least one of their two matches, against Namibia or Afghanistan.
