After running England close at Edgbaston in Birmingham, India were expected to give the Brits a run for their money at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. However, they couldn’t and slumped to a humiliating defeat by an innings and 159 runs. The Poms, on the contrary, were clinical and hardly allowed the visiting team to make a comeback in the contest at the Home of Cricket.

The encounter didn’t start on an auspicious note as the first day’s play was washed out by rain. Rain even threatened to play spoilsport in the second day and only 35.2 overs were possible. But the Three Lions took those many overs to shot India out for a paltry 107 runs. James Anderson, the English fast-bowler turned out to be a wrecker-in-chief as he picked up a stupendous five-wicket-haul.

India capitulate alarmingly

The likes of Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad and Sam Curran lent him appropriate support to restrict the Indian batsmen. The visiting team’s bowlers picked up a few early wickets to put the skids under the English batsmen. Nevertheless, Woakes and Jonny Bairstow put 189 runs for the sixth-wicket stand to virtually put the match beyond India’s radar.

Virat Kohli’s men came to bat with a massive trial of 289 runs ahead of them. Unfortunately, they lost wickets in clumps even in the second innings as the English bowlers kept unfolding mayhem in their camp. In the meantime, despite the heavy defeat, Waqar Younis, the former Pakistan cricketer, reckons that India have the capacity to make a comeback with three matches remaining in the five-match series.

He also praised Joe Root and Co for their resounding performance. He took to Twitter and wrote, “Incredible performance by England at #Lords Simply too good..They outclassed India..but im not writing off India as yet..They have the capacity and the capability to bounce back..Still, plenty left in this series #ENGvsIND”
