Former Pakistan skipper and a legend of the game Wasim Akram is widely regarded as the best left-arm pacer to ever play the game. Making his Test debut in 1984, Wasim continued to enthral fans and fellow cricketers for almost 20 years, calling quits on his career in 2003. He played over 100 Tests and 300 ODIs in his career and was the first bowler to pick over 400 wickets in both forms of international cricket.

Wasim Akram is a diabetic patient and has played the majority of his career taking insulin injections in between matches and even during the games. He was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 29 and has mentioned in interviews how he had to change his lifestyle in order to continue playing the game he loved so much.

However, recently, Akram had to take help of social media in order to bring to light how badly he was treated at the Manchester airport just because of his insulin carrying bag. Apparently, at the airport, security made him take out the insulin from its cold carrying case, questioned badly and then ordered to keep the insulin in plastic bags instead of the original packaging.

Akram tweeted, “Very disheartened at Manchester airport today, I travel around the world with my insulin but never have I been made to feel embarrassed. I felt very humiliated as I was rudely questioned & ordered publicly to take my insulin out of its travel cold-case & dumped into a plastic bag”

Talking about his diabetes, Akram has mentioned, “I was diagnosed with diabetes in 1997. I was only 29 years old. I thought my life was gone — no more cricket. But, my wife gave me mental strength. It’s just mental discipline. Temptations are there. I feel like having biryani every night — naans and kulchas, and niharis. But I avoid it.”

He further mentioned he had to train his mind to be happy with fewer carbs and has to check his insulin levels regularly. “Before lunch, I eat a bowl of stir-fried vegetables so my stomach is more or less full. And then I’ll have a little of whatever else is there. So that’s the sort of technique I’ve used to train myself,” he was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda.
