What a start! Brilliant, brilliant delivery from Plunkett! Roared the commentator on the mic after watching Plunkett shatter the woodwork of Australian opener Adam Gilchrist during England’s clash with Australia of the Commonwealth Bank series in 2007 at Sydney.
There can’t be any other more spectacular way to start your team’s defense other than snapping the opener of the opposition with the very first ball of the innings. England, batting first, has set a target of 293 runs for the Australians to chase. The target was quite challenging but not unachievable.
Australia perhaps had the most destructive opening pair at that time in the form of Adam Gilchrist and Mathew Hayden. But, on that particular day, the pair was curbed from batting together in their usual manner after right arm fast bowler Liam Plunkett clean bowled Adam Gilchrist with the first ball of the first innings. Gilly had no answer to the straight and full delivery. Such type of ball is the most unexpected thing from a fast bowler even if he’s a master in bowling those yorkers.
However, Plunkett surprised Gilchrist and the spectators by executing a perfect full-length ball and taking the prized wicket of the Australian opener. The Australians could never really take off after that as they folded for just 200 eventually to lose the game by 92 runs. Plunkett went on take two more in the day to finish with figures of 3/24.
