Chris Gayle today once again proved his authority in the T20 format after he played a record-breaking innings for Melbourne Renegades. The Renegades had a crucial game today against the Adelaide Strikers. It was a must win game for them in order to qualify for the spot in the semi-finals of the Big Bash.
The Strikers batted first and set up a target of 171 runs. The Renegades needed to chase it in just 16 overs and opener Chris Gayle took total responsibility of it by giving a rollicking start to them.
Gayle started off with four consecutive sixes off the first over by Greg West. The ‘Jamaican Giant’ was in no mood to spare anybody today as he went on to hit two back to back sixes off the first two balls of the next Ben Laughlin over, topping it with a hit to the fence on the third ball.
By the third over, the Renegades had raced past the 50 run mark. Gayle hit Travis Head for his seventh six of the innings and completed his half-century in just 12 balls. With that he also equalled Yuvraj’s record for the fastest T20 fifty. Yuvraj had set this record in the 2007 T20 World Cup against England.
Gayle was finally dismissed by Head in the sixth over after he top-edged a catch to wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman. In spite of his whirlwind knock, the Strikers still managed to beat the Renegades by 27 runs and advanced to the semi-finals of the league.
Gayle also holds the record for the fastest T20 ton. He achieved the feat during the 2013 Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bangalore, reaching the triple-figure mark in just 30 balls against Pune Warriors.
