Melbourne Renegades versus Adelaide Strikers game was seen as the opportunity for Chris Gayle to gain back his status in the BBL with his bat. It was also very important tie for the Renegades. They needed to beat Adelaide Strikers by 38 runs or chase down their total inside 16 overs to overtake fourth-placed Thunder on run rate to move ahead in the tournament.

The home team won the toss and put Strikers to bat who posted a tricky target of 171 runs. Renegades required a quick start which could have happened only if Chris Gayle fired. Obviously, the stage was set for Gayle and carnage was expected at the Etihad Stadium today.

Gayle made his intent clear after he smashed four consecutive sixes off the first over by Greg West. Gayle carried on in the same fashion by hitting two back to back sixes off the first two ball of the Ben Laughlin over and topped it with a boundary off the next ball. The Renegades had already rocketed off past the 50-run mark by the end of the 3rd over. 45 runs of them had come from Gayle’s bat. The first ball of the third over was the moment when Gayle hit Travis Head for his seventh six of the innings and completed his half-century in just 12 balls. This terrific feat today equalized the epic Yuvraj Singh knock in the 2007 T20 World Cup against England.

Gayle drew a lot of negative publicity because of the sexist controversy but this thunderous performance has erased the black spot from the minds of the fans. The impact of this knock was evident on Twitter as it soon was flooded with tweets from the astonished cricket lovers.
