Dinesh Karthik

Not many would forget the sight of Dinesh Karthik as he stumped Michael Vaughan in 2004, moving smartly to the leg side to collect the wide from Harbhajan Singh. The then 19-year-old wicket-keeper batsman was, was handed his ODI cap at the Mecca of Cricket – the Lord’s.

But, he looked like a complete pro with the way he showed his presence of mind behind the stumps. It was the 3rd ODI of the Natwest Challenge in 2004. India posted a below-par target of 205 runs for the hosts to chase after winning the toss and electing to bat first at the Lord’s.

Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid’s half-centuries were the only saving grace for the visitors as the rest of the batting order crumbled like a spineless creature. The debutant Karthik, himself was bowled by Steve Harmison after scoring just a run.

In reply, Ashish Nehra gave a wonderful start by sending back Marcus Trescothick and Vikram Solanki by the end of the 4th over. India found further success as Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh snapped up wickets in a quick succession later on.

However, skipper Michael Vaughan stood firmly in the middle and became the thorn in the flesh for India who were on course to a stunning win. The English skipper batted patiently and struck a useful half-century before departing on 74 in the 44th over. The reason behind his downfall – Dinesh Karthik’s agile wicket keeping.

Vaughan hurried to cut down the turn by stepping out of the crease against Harbhajan. However, the right-hander completely missed the ball and was effectively caught short by Karthik from behind giving India the most important wicket of the day. The Englishmen were eventually bowled out for just 181, giving India a famous 23 runs win.
