The name ‘Liam Plunkett’ became etched in cricket history. Although he wouldn’t have dreamt of it even in his wildest dreams, Plunkett’s bat rather than the ball had a massive say in the first ODI between England and Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.

With seven runs required off the last seven deliveries, Plunkett smashed Nuwan Pradeep over the long-off fence for a maximum. Although a few Lankans in the crowd had mixed feelings, Dinesh Chandimal was a picture of disappointment following the result. Liam Plunkett for his part was delighted as he accepted the congratulations for the man of the match Chris Woakes.

While the England management in the form of Paul Farbrace was delighted with the result, the delight came at a cost. England had lost their first few wickets cheaply as the Sri Lankan bowling juggernaut pegged them back rather strongly. Moreover, they lost the wickets of Alex Hales, Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, and Joe Root within the opening 10 overs of the encounter. Eoin Morgan soon fell after as his fighting knock of 43 came to an abrupt end. England was reeling at 72-6 with 18 overs played.

However, Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes came to the rescue as they smashed 93 and 95 respectively as the hosts came close to the total set by the Lankans. However, a few dismissals and dot balls saw them require 7 runs of the last delivery from Nuwan Pradeep. However, Liam Plunkett had other ideas as he hit the six that brought an end to the fairy-tale ODI encounter.
