In the 2012 Asia cup, Shahid Afridi probably experienced the most unlucky dismissal of his international career. He was dismissed caught and bowled by Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s premier all-rounder, who got a huge favour from the then Pakistani captain, Misbah-ul-Haq! Afridi who came into bat when his team was struggling on 192 for 5. He must have thought of playing a little cameo to save his team from further humiliation, but he too perished in a bizarre way.
Afridi, facing his fourth ball, played it straight back at Shakib. It was a flighted delivery bowled on the middle-leg stump line that Afridi drove a bit on the up and straight to the left-arm spinner. The ball went low at Shakib and he bent himself down to make his first attempt for a caught and bowled chance. He missed it, however, was able to keep the ball in the air.
After hitting his hands, the ball went to his left and again he made an unsuccessful attempt at holding onto it. Though he tumbled, he was able to scoop it up in the air where Misbah was standing at the non-striker’s end. The ball hit the Pakistani skipper and before it could have landed on the pitch, Shakib brilliantly caught it with his right hand.
Shakib and his team thoroughly enjoyed the wicket and started celebrating, much to the bemusement of Misbah, who was seen pointing towards the umpire gesturing his doubts about the first two attempts, however, the replays confirmed that Afridi was clearly out. It was a great presence of mind shown from Shakib who kept his eyes on the ball all the way and didn’t let it hit the floor. The dismissal in the end didn’t hurt Pakistan much as they managed to win the match by 21 runs.
