For once, the spinner got spun herself by her romantic partner. Adelaide Strikers leggie Amanda Wellington was in for a massive surprise when her boyfriend proposed her in front of her teammates and hundreds of cheering fans following her side’s convincing six-wicket win over the Melbourne Renegades in a Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) on Saturday. The Strikers restricted the Renegades to 117 for 7 in 20 overs and then overhauled the target in the 16th over with opener Sophie Devine slamming 72 not out in just 45 balls to end up as the player of the match.
On an otherwise ordinary day at Adelaide’s Karen Rolton Oval when she went for 28 runs in four overs without any wicket, Amanda was with her teammates celebrating the victory and signing autographs for the fans when Tayler McKechnie – the 22-year-old who has been dating for over a year – took help of the South Australian Cricket Association staff members to get the players together for a “team photo”.
There, Mckechnie went to his knees before his partner to propose her with a ring, leaving Amanda pleasantly embarrassed and her mates in great joy. It was a tale of a team support backed by a story of individual glory.
So, this just happened!!! 😃

Amanda Wellington had no idea what her boyfriend was planning to do
Amanda, who made her international debut in 2016 and has played one Test, 12 ODIs and eight T20Is, said she had no idea about what McKechnie was planning to do. “When I saw him on the field, I just thought: ‘Get off, we’re trying to take a team photo’. I had no idea what was really happening, but I’m so happy, I’m still shaking,” The Daily Telegraph quoted the spinner with 27 international scalps as saying.
McKechnie, 23, proposed his girlfriend using a Pokemon card with the words: “Will you marry me?” written on it. Amanda didn’t think twice before saying yes.
The WBBL is witnessing its fifth season this year. The tournament kicked off on Friday with a match between the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunders. The Strikers-Renegades game was the third of the season and with their six-wicket win, the Strikers are at No.2 of the points table, trailing the Sixers in net run rate.
Reigning champions Brisbane Heat took on the Sixers in another game on Saturday. The tournament will conclude on December 8.
