Faf du Plessis has been appointed as the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s new captain for IPL 2022. He succeeded Virat Kohli who had led the franchise for nine seasons from 2013 to 2021 before relinquishing captaincy after the end of last season. Meanwhile, Kohli has revealed the reason behind RCB deciding to let Faf lead them from the front.

Giving further clarification on the same, the batting megastar said that the veteran South African batter is someone who, according to him and the franchise, commands a lot of respect in the dressing room as a leader. He also added that they were crystal clear about the same when dDu Plessis was roped in by them at the two-day mega auction in Bengaluru last month.

Faf du Plessis will do a tremendous job: Virat Kohli

“Getting Faf at the auctions for us, the plan was very clear. We need a leader in the change room who commands a lot of respect. Commands not demands, because he has been there done that,” Kohli said in a video posted by RCB’s Twitter handle.

“He’s a Test captain, that profile comes with a lot of accolades already and we are excited for him to lead RCB. He will do a tremendous job. We get along really well with him, all of us myself Maxi (Glenn Maxwell) Dinesh Karthik and I think all the guys will enjoy this tournament,” he added.

Faf du Plessis has been roped in by the Bengaluru-based franchise for a sum of INR seven crore. He finished as the second-highest run-scorer last season for the Chennai Super Kings with 633 runs from 16 matches averaging 45.21 including six half-centuries and played a key role in CSK’s fourth title triumph. Despite his outstanding performances, he was not retained by the defending champions for the upcoming season.  The Proteas sensation would now be expected to take RCB to greater heights starting this year as they eye a maiden IPL title.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore begin their IPL 2022 campaign against the Punjab Kings at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on March 27.
