Star Sri Lanka batter Dinesh Chandimal scored a spectacular maiden double hundred in the ongoing second Test match against Australia in Galle on July 11, Monday, helping Sri Lanka finish with a total of 554 and a lead of 190. He remained unbeaten on 206 off 326 balls, with five sixes and 16 fours, and has virtually put the match beyond Australia’s grasp.

Sri Lanka, at one stage, were at 402 for five wickets, and Chandimal, from the other end, watched all the batters who followed, perish without much contribution. Ramesh Mendis, at number eight, chipped in with 29, but the number seven, nine, ten and eleven, all got out for not more than 10 runs.

It was Chandimal alone, from that point, who carried the team forward to a score of above 550, with some aggressive stroke-making against the Aussie pacers. He also brought up his double hundred with two back-to-back huge sixes over cow corner against Mitchell Starc, when he was on 189. And the last wicket partnership with Kasun Rajitha added 49 runs off just 37 balls, with Rajitha not scoring any run.

Dinesh Chandimal set the record for the highest score by Sri Lankan against Australia

This is now the highest Test score by a Sri Lankan against Australia, going past the previous best of 192 by Kumar Sangakkara. Sri Lanka, in the end, were bowled out in 181 overs, as Chandimal was left stranded on the other end. The Aussie bowlers have not had a successful outing in the match so far, barring the ace fast bowler, Starc, who picked up four wickets for 89 runs in 29 overs.

Skipper Pat Cummins got one wicket for 95 runs in 30 overs, off-spinner Nathan Lyon got two wickets for 194 runs in 64 overs, and leggie Mitchell Swepson got three wickets for 103 runs in 38 overs. Although the two days weren’t fruitful for the Aussie bowlers in the Test match, it has to be said that they were unlucky to not get the wicket of Chandimal when he was batting on 30 on Day 3 and nicked one onto wicketkeeper Alex Carey. The on-field umpire did not give it out, and Australia could not send it upstairs since they had exhausted all their reviews. The Sri Lankan batter made full use of the lifeline and played a tremendous knock.
