It was a week to forget for the Royal Challengers Bangalore as they were scheduled to play 4 games but their first home game this week was washed out while they lost the remaining three, with embarrassing batting performances. RCB was all out for 49, the lowest total in IPL, were bundled out for just 134 at home and managing to post just 96 even after batting all full 20 overs.
This disaster has put the RCB side in a critical position as they have just 5 points after 10 games and winning in all the remaining 4 games will see them end with 13 points, a figure with which no team has made it to the playoffs. However, the Bangalore franchise is yet to be knocked out of the tournament but need a lot of hard work and hoping to take them to next round.
The hard work will be to win their remaining games while also hoping to see the selective teams win or lose. As mentioned in the previous article, the washout point will help RCB remove the NRR out of the equation which is currently the worse among all the teams and all they need from here on is just to win all the upcoming matches.
In case if they win all 4 and qualify for the playoffs, it will be the 4th instance of a team needing 4 or more wins in all the remaining games to make into next round. Of those 4, RCB has done it on two occasions.
Season | Team | Consecutive wins towards the end of league stage |
2009 | Royal Challengers Bangalore | 4 |
2010 | Deccan Chargers | 5 |
2014 | Mumbai Indians | 4 |
2016 | Royal Challengers Bangalore | 4 |
Talking about the elements they need to go in their favor here on is the top 3 teams: Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad winning in all the remaining games over the likes of Rising Pune Supergiant, Kings XI Punjab, Gujarat Lions and Delhi Daredevils and these 4 teams shouldn’t go past 12 points.
Delhi Daredevils: Delhi is yet to play 7 games. Their next 7 games are vs KXIP, vs SRH, vs GL, vs MI, vs GL, vs RPS and vs RCB. They need a loss against SRH, MI and RCB and can bag wins over KXIP, GL (2) and RPS.
Gujarat Lions: The Gujarat Lions’ remaining 5 games are vs RPS, vs DD, vs KXIP, vs DD and vs SRH. The Gujarat side needs to lose to SRH and one of the remaining 4 games, most probably one of their two games vs DD.
Kings XI Punjab: The remaining 6 matches of Kings XI Punjab are vs DD, vs RCB, vs GL, vs KKR, vs MI and vs RPS. With KXIP needed to lose their games vs MI, KKR and RCB, adding 3 wins vs DD, GL and RPS to their tally of 3 wins doesn’t affect RCB’s 13 point mark.
Rising Pune Supergiant: The remaining 5 games of the RPS are vs GL, vs KKR, vs SRH, vs DD and vs RPS. With 5 wins in 9 games, the Pune side shouldn’t win more than 1 game to make way for RCB into the playoffs with 13 points. In fact, RCB has got a chance even if they win only three of their next 4 but for that, they should defeat KXIP and DD and the loss can be against MI or KKR.Once again in the scenario as well, they will need MI, KKR and SRH to defeat the like of RPS, KXIP, GL and DD. In this case, the upcoming results need to go in the following way for the Royal Challengers to all them to make into playoffs with just 11 points i.e. with only 5 wins.
