Jess Jonassen, the pick of Australia’s bowlers that night, struck again in the same over to remove Hayley Jensen, who, too, failed to convert her start into anything substantial. Amy Satterthwaite, though, provided the innings the much-needed move on through her 31-ball 40 during a 60-run partnership with Amelia Kerr, but Australia dented the chance of New Zealand finishing strong by accounting for three wickets in a space of 11 deliveries in overs 14-16.

New Zealand’s hopes shot up after Australia stumbled initially but Gardner’s onslaught proved too hot for the Kiwis to handle as the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the series. With the series on the line, New Zealand must be keen to break their string of losses as well as keep the series alive for a little longer than Tuesday.

The average score at McLean Park in three T20Is so has been 185 with the chasers winning twice. However, a 10-5 record in favor of the teams batting first in domestic games suggests that the venue has fared well for the defenders too.
