Australia Women showed why they are the no. 1 ranked side against New Zealand in the first T20I of the series. They were reeling at 14 for 3 in a chase of 133 with the three major cogs of their top-order – Alyssa Healy, Beth Mooney, and Rachael Haynes – back in the pavilion adding 5 from 16 balls combined. Of the three batters, Mooney was undone for a golden duck by Jess Kerr immediately after Frances Mackay claimed Healy’s wicket on the last ball of the opening over.
Ashleigh Gardner walked in the face of adversity with a rebellious intent as she smoked a 48-ball 73, with six fours and three sixes in all, adding a sedate 48 for the fourth wicket alongside Meg Lanning, who happily played the second fiddle to her, before blasting off a 71-run stand off just 38 deliveries with Ellyse Perry to seal the game with 12 balls remaining.
While it must be heartening for New Zealand that they were able to better their performance from what they did against England during the recent home series, they must beware that any marginal improvement from a below-par standard will not take them too high against a dominant opposition like Australia. After they were put in the previous game, the regular loss of wickets never quite allowed their innings to gain the requisite momentum.
After a string of low scores, Sophie Devine hung in there but departed before she could have shifted gears. Jess Jonassen, the pick of Australia’s bowlers that night, struck again in the same over to remove Hayley Jensen, who, too, failed to convert her start into anything substantial. Amy Satterthwaite, though, provided the innings the much-needed move on through her 31-ball 40 during a 60-run partnership with Amelia Kerr, but Australia dented the chance of New Zealand finishing strong by accounting for three wickets in a space of 11 deliveries in overs 14-16.
New Zealand’s hopes shot up after Australia stumbled initially but Gardner’s onslaught proved too hot for the Kiwis to handle as the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the series. With the series on the line, New Zealand must be keen to break their string of losses as well as keep the series alive for a little longer than Tuesday.
Pitch and conditions
The average score at McLean Park in three T20Is so has been 185 with the chasers winning twice. However, a 10-5 record in favor of the teams batting first in domestic games suggests that the venue has fared well for the defenders too. An assistive surface for batters can be expected with the new-ball bowlers in for some early movement.
