At the age of 34, the Colombo-born is well and truly at the fag end of his illustrious career.
The veteran is currently busy taking part in the two-match Test series against the West Indies. The fact that he has already been in the Lankan cricketing circuit for a while has made him a popular figure in the country. His fandom was evident during the second Test at the Galle International Stadium. One of his fans came with a banner that bagged all the limelight.

Angelo Mathews performing to expectations
Mathews has had a reasonable outing in the ongoing series against the Caribbean team. In the first innings of the opening Test, he got out to Roston Chase after scoring only three runs. In the second innings, he was at his very best as he notched an unbeaten 84-ball 69, laced with six fours and two sixes. Mathews played at a strike-rate of 82.14 and showed his calibre with the bat in hand.
With the ball, he didn’t operate in the first Test. In the first innings of the second Test, Mathews looked in pretty good form. He scored 29 runs off 45 balls with two fours and as many sixes before Jomel Warrican accounted for his wicket. He came to bat at No.4, but saw wickets gong down at the other end. From 106 for no loss, Sri Lanka were bowled out for a mere 204 in 61.3 overs.
Veerasammy Permaul went on to pick up a stupendous five-wicket haul. Warrican lent him support with four wickets. The collapse meant that the West Indies racked up a significant lead of 49 runs after the end of both teams’ first innings.
