Sri Lankan speedster, Suranga Lakmal, emerged as one of the biggest positives for his team in the first Test against India at Kolkata. Lakmal starred with the ball on the rain-affected first day of the Test. He bowled six maidens in a row and had the Indian top order dancing to his tunes on the day. He bagged the wicket of KL Rahul on the very first ball of the match. He then followed it up by dismissing Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli a few overs later. He eventually finished with 4 wickets to his name in the first innings.

Recently, S.H. Chadralatha, mother of Suranga Lakmal, expressed her happiness over the way her son had bowled in the match. As per the quotes in the Kashmir Times, she remarked that she was delighted to see her son dismiss Virat Kohli. She loved the wicket of Virat Kohli more than the wicket of KL Rahul. She explained that Rahul is a dangerous batsman too, but Kohli’s record against Sri Lanka has been phenomenal.

“Virat Kohli’s wicket gave me more satisfaction. Yes, the opener was out first ball but this he has done in the past also (West Indies’ Gayle’s wicket, at Pallekele, 2010-11). The captain (Kohli) was out for no score. He is a very dangerous batsman in the world. His batting record against Sri Lanka has been good. It was a difficult wicket to achieve of a superb batsman,” quoted Suranga Lakmal’s  mother.

Lokesh Rahul is also a good batsman but I reckon Kohli’s wicket was more satisfying. Suranga did a very outstanding bowling. He was simply superb. Sri Lankan fans saw it after a long time against India and I am happy for my son. Hope he will do his best in the series. I am a proud mother,” she added.

On the verge of a new record

The innocent lady was probably unaware that her son is on the verge of creating a new record. He has taken a wicket on the first ball of a Test match on two occasions. India’s Kapil Dev and New Zealand’s Richard Hadlee have also achieved this feat twice. The only one ahead in the race is West Indies’ Pedro Collins, who has achieved this feat thrice in Tests.
