Former India coach John Wright feels that the Indian team could be the team to beat at the upcoming edition of the ICC Champions Trophy. The tournament kick starts on June 1 with the hosts England taking on Bangladesh. Team India will play their first game against the arch-rival Pakistan on June 4. Wright believes that the Indian squad for the tournament looks very good on paper.

He further noted that the pace attack of the Indian team is better than ever before. They have the services of Umesh Yadav, Mohammad Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Jasprit Bumrah. John Wright said that if team India coach Anil Kumble manages his pace brigade with utmost care, the Indian team will be very hard to beat in the tournament for sure.

“India’s got a good team. Your pace attack is perhaps the most potent it’s ever been. The Indian seamers were very good in India earlier, and if Anil Kumble (the current India coach) can ensure that they stay disciplined (in terms of line and length) in England, it would be tough to beat India,” said John Wright as per the quotes in the Times of India.

He further added that the batting might be a concern for the defending champions. The batsmen will have to quickly adapt to the English conditions since the ball will be seaming around. Moreover, he emphasized on the fact that the team that adapts to the situations quickly shall prevail.

“However, your batsmen need to adapt quickly to the conditions, because it’ll be early summer in England, and the ball will seam around. In fact, the team which the quickest in adapting to the English conditions will win the tournament,” the former Kiwi cricketer noted.

A special mention for Anil Kumble

John Wright had a special word of mention for Indian coach Anil Kumble. He feels the players are blessed to have the services of Kumble as their head coach in the national side. “The current group of India players are so fortunate to have Kumble as their coach. He’s an outstanding man of great integrity and great intelligence,” he quipped.
