Windies cricket has strained to find their feet over the last few years. However, amidst their travails, they have managed to churn out some useful cricketers, right-handed batsman Shai Hope is one of them. He made his debut against England back in 2015 and has steadfastly turned into an indispensable member of the national team, especially in Test and ODI cricket.

Recently, he played Windies‘ home Test and ODI series against Bangladesh, but couldn’t quite deliver the goods for his team. Nevertheless, bearing in mind his talent with the bat, he has a bright future in the offing. As far as his goals are concerned, the Barbados-born cricketer dreams of breaking Brian Lara’s record of the highest individual Test score of 400, scored back in April 2004.

Hope’s dream of going big

“I’d like to break Brian Lara’s 400 record in Test match cricket. It’s going to be a tough ask but one day hopefully I will get over the line,” Hope was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Lara accomplished the feat in the fourth Test of Windies’ tour of England in St John’s. He came to bat at number three and wielded his magic with the bat in hand. The visiting team played 202 overs, which translates into a tad over two days of play.

He eventually scored 400 runs from 582 deliveries and the knock was carved with 43 boundaries and four sixes. Even after 14 years, no player has got even close to breaking the record. For the time being Hope is representing Barbados Tridents in this year’s Caribbean Premier League and has already impressed.

The Tridents played their first match against Guyana Amazon Warriors and the 24-year-old scored 88 runs in 45 balls with half-a-dozen boundaries and as many sixes. He would be hoping to perform decently and turn into a regular member in the T20I team as well.
