Australia are up and running at the Women’s World Cup having beaten Pakistan in the latest match of the ongoing tournament. With the win, they have now registered two consecutive wins in as many games and are looking solid on the points table.

Australia, having won the toss, put the opposition in to bat at the Bay Oval. Though the Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof consolidated a half-century, scoring 78* off 122 balls, her side could not impose itself on the game in their first innings. Lower middle-order batter, Aliya Riaz was the second-highest scorer for Pakistan, however, her half-century came at an underwhelming strike rate of 48.63 with Pakistan managing 190-6 in their full quota of overs.

Australia in their pursuit of the target was comprehensive, with the opposition not posing any real questions. Star opener, Alyssa Healy was the team’s star with the bat scoring a brisk 72 off 79 balls with seven boundaries. Australia ended up winning the encounter in the 35th over of their innings with seven wickets to spare, thus handing Pakistan their second defeat in a row.

India sits second on the table after win over Pakistan

Post their latest win, Australia sit comfortably at top of the points table with four points in their kitty. Apart from them, only three other teams in New Zealand, Bangladesh and Pakistan have so far played two games, with the remaining five teams having only played one match each.

India, on the back of their win against Pakistan in their opening game, are at the second position with South Africa and New Zealand taking the third and fourth spot, respectively. West Indies and England, who have both lost their opening games, are fifth and sixth on the table while Bangladesh and Pakistan take up the last two positions on the table respectively.

The tournament now moves to Dunedin where West Indies go against defending champions England, with both teams looking to open their account.
