In the 22nd match of the ongoing Women’s World Cup 2022, India defeated Bangladesh comfortably by 110 runs, despite being reduced to 108/4 at one stage. Bangladesh, who are making their maiden ODI World Cup appearance, showed a lot of promise with the ball, but they were nowhere in contention with the bat.

Having suffered successive defeats against England and Australia, India were playing a relatively easier opposition in Bangladesh. As they are set to face another top team in South Africa next match, Mithali Raj’s team had the onus not just to win but also by a tremendous margin. The match began with Bangladesh bowling tight lines and lengths, as they restricted India to just 25 runs in 8 overs, although they weren’t rewarded with a wicket. Shafali Verma had, then, broken the shackles at the fag end of the powerplay, by scoring 24 runs alone in the next two overs.

After some more decent scoring, India were all of a sudden reduced from 74/0 to 74/3. The other experienced player in Harmanpreet Kaur was soon run-out at 14, as India were in trouble at 108/4. Nonetheless, Yashika Bhatia stood around and went on to score a crucial fifty. Her innings, along with important cameos from the Indian lower order trio of Richa Ghosh, Pooja Vastrakar and Sneh Rana, helped India post 229/7 in their allotted 50 overs. For Bangladesh, left-arm spinner Nahida Akter and right-arm pacer Ritu Moni shared five wickets each.

A target of 230 proved to be a daunting task for the Bangladesh side, whose main weakness has been their batting. They never looked to chase the total, as the Indian bowlers managed to take wickets at regular intervals. Gayakwad, Pooja, Sneh and Poonam combined to reduce Bangladesh to 35/5.

Lata Mondal and Salma Khatun then shared a 40-run stand to provide the only sort of fight in the Bangladesh batting. The pressure of the asking rate couldn’t ensure any big innings from the Bangladeshi batters. The experience of Jhulan Goswami, and further brilliance by Sneh Rana, helped India to wrap it up soon and make it a comfortable win for India.

Let’s have a look at the stats from this India-Bangladesh match.

1 – This is the first time India and Bangladesh locked horns in the Women’s World Cup.

200 – Jhulan Goswami became the first player to bowl in 200 Women’s ODI innings. No one comes even close, as the second-highest is Jenny Gunn who bowled in 136 innings.

17.2 – Overs taken by India to claim the fifth wicket of Bangladesh. This is the third-fewest number of overs India took to claim the first five wickets of the opposition in the Women’s World Cup. India took fewer overs to dismiss the opposition’s top-5 against Pakistan in 2009 and 2017.

2 –  This is only the second time Mithali Raj was out for a duck in the Women’s World Cup. The first one was against South Africa in 2017, out by Dane van Niekerk. Incidentally both of them are first-ball ducks, which are the only first-ball ducks in Mithali’s ODI career.

6 – Each of the players Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Yastika Bhatia, Richa Ghosh, Pooja Vastrakar and Sneh Rana scored at least 25 runs. This is the first time six or more Indians scored at least 25 runs in a Women’s ODI innings. This is also the second instance for any team in the Women’s World Cup, with the first instance being recorded by England against Australia in 2017.

4 – India have now played four Women’s ODIs against Bangladesh, and they have won all of them.

4 – India have now won their all four encounters against Bangladesh in the Women’s World Cups across ODI and T20I formats. While this was the first India-Bangladesh match played in the Women’s ODI World Cup, India defeated Bangladesh in the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2014, 2016 and 2020.

270 – Runs scored by Harmanpreet Kaur in the tournament, the fourth-highest by an Indian in a season of the Women’s World Cup. Harmanpreet also holds the third spot, as she scored 359 runs in the 2017 season. Only Mithali Raj and Punam Raut scored more with 409 runs and 381 runs respectively, both in the 2017 season.

4 – Number of single-digit scores for Mithali Raj in this World Cup, in just six innings. In no other Women’s World Cup Mithali was out for a single-digit score more than twice.

3 – India have now won three matches in this Women’s World Cup, and each of them are wins by over 100 runs. This is the highest by India in a single edition of the Women’s World Cup, overtaking two such wins in 2000 edition, which was also held in New Zealand.

30 – Jhulan Goswami becomes the first Indian player to take 30 Women’s World Cup wickets in winning causes.
