New Zealand batter Amy Satterthwaite scored a well-paced 75 while all-rounder Amelia Kerr also slammed a half-century in White Ferns’s victory over India by 62 runs in the eighth match of the World Cup at Seddon Park in Hamilton. Amelia mustered 50 runs off 64 balls and also took three wickets. Veteran pacer Lee Tahuhu also picked up as many wickets and gave away just 17 runs in ten overs.
Earlier in the match, India skipper Mithali Raj won the toss and elected to field first. Suzie Bates got run-out by Pooja Vastrakar for just five runs while captain Sophie Devine scored a quick-fire 35. Amelia and Satterthwaite then joined forces and brought up their respective fifties. Wicketkeeper batter Katey Martin amassed 41 runs off 51 balls as the hosts New Zealand reached a competitive total of 260/9 in 50 overs. Vastrakar was the pick of the Indian bowlers as she snared four scalps for 34 runs in ten overs.
In reply, Indian started off slowly as openers Smriti Mandhana and Yastika Bhatia struggled against the new ball. Mandhana scored six runs off 21 deliveries while Bhatia made 28 off 59 balls as all the Kiwi bowlers bowled tightly and economically, especially Lee Tahuhu. While captain Mithali scored 31, it was Harmanpreet Kaur who played a lone hand of 71 runs as regular wickets hurt the Indian side.
India got bundled out for 198 in 46.3 overs with Tahuhu and Amelia Kerr picking up three wickets apiece. At the end, New Zealand continued their domination over India from the bilateral series which was held prior to the World Cup. The host New Zealand subsequently moved to the second place with four points while India remained at the fifth place with one win and one loss.
