He was always considered as an “X-factor” player for New Zealand. The broad-structured batting all-rounder indeed proved himself to be in the ongoing cricket World Cup. In a gap of a week, the Zimbabwe-born Colin de Grandhomme played two gems in the tournament that showed once again that the Black Caps have taken this World Cup a lot seriously.

However, although Grandhomme’s performance with the bat has made the New Zealand fans happy, those of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for which he plays in the Indian Premier League are not too happy. Grandhomme showed his batting skills in the matches against South Africa and Pakistan to help his side stem the rot and deliver a counter punch.

He came out in the game against the Proteas at Edgbaston with New Zealand having lost five wickets for 137 while chasing 242 in 49 overs. He played a breezy knock of 60 off 47 balls to add a match-turning 91 runs with his captain Kane Williamson for the sixth wicket in less than 15 overs.

That was on last Wednesday. Exactly a week later, Grandhomme chipped in as the saviour once again, this time making 64 off 71 balls to add 132 runs with James Neesham in just over 21 overs to take his side to a respectable 237 for 6 in 50 overs from a much bad 83 for 5. Having made his ODI debut in 2012, Grandhomme is playing in the World Cup for the first time and he has certainly made it memorable.

Grandhomme, an underperformer for RCB

However, in India, not many were happy with the Kiwi cricketer. Grandhomme is known for his big-hitting capacity in T20s as he possesses a strike rate of 164 plus in 178 games. He also has 65 wickets in the format. However, despite his potential, the all-rounder has remained an underperformer in the IPL. He started playing the tournament since 2017 when he appeared for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

He joined the RCB in 2018 making the franchise shell out Rs 2.2 crore but in two seasons so far, he has made only 177 runs in 13 games. This year. Grandhomme’s form was particularly ordinary as he could make only 46 runs in the four opportunities he got and failed to pick a single wicket.

Here is how the Twitterati reacted to Grandhomme after he played another valuable knock for his team at the World Cup:
