India’s No. 4 conundrum which started four years back after the 2015 World Cup is still a problem. Multiple players were tried at the spot but none of them could seal it. Ambati Rayudu played at No. 4 in almost every game in the lead up to the World Cup.

However, inconsistency in the lead up to the  squad selection led to his axing. Vijay Shankar was picked ahead of the Hyderabad batsman. Also, Shankar is tipped to bat at No. 4 . He certainly adds a lot of variety in the side. However, he hasn’t played a lot of international cricket (9 ODIs and 9 T20Is). Moreover, he has never batted at a crucial position while donning the blue jersey at the highest level.

The big question is can Shankar live up to the hype and keep the selectors’ faith? He did bat at No. 3 and 4 for the most part of the IPL but didn’t have great results. The all-rounder could be the weak link in India’s line-up.
