World T20 2016: India Player Ratings

India were outclassed by the West Indies in the semi-finals of the World T20 2016 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Lendl Simmons played a match winning knock for the West Indians with a lavish 82 off 51 balls as he paved the way for a successful chase by the Caribbeans, thus eliminating India from the tournament. India won 3 games and lost 2 including the semi-final. They had their moments in the WT20. While some players were phenomenal in their roles, others struggled to put up an unprecedented performance. Here we discuss and rate each player according to his performance in the tournament. Rohit Sharma – 4/10: Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma.(Photo by MUNIR UZ ZAMAN/AFP/Getty Images) There were high expectations from Rohit Sharma in the tournament but he failed to live upto them. In the Super 10s, he scored just 45 runs in 4 matches, nowhere close to the standards he has set for himself. Most of the times, he didn’t bat responsibly and ended up gifting his wicket. He showed some sublime touch in the semis though, but couldn’t withstand that for a big one. Shikhar Dhawan – 2.5/10: Shikhar Dhawan of India. Shikhar Dhawan could only manage 43 runs in the four matches that he played and was dropped for the semi-finals. The worst thing was his strike rate which was 82.69, way below what was expected from him. Ajinkya Rahane – 5/10: Ajinkya Rahane. (Photo Source: Twitter) Rahane got his only chance in the semi-final against West Indies where he scored 40 runs off 36 balls. Though it was a well constructed innings, he failed to switch gears and couldn’t accelerate. He ended up giving a catch to Dwayne Bravo trying to go for a big one. He scored 3 half-centuries against Pakistan, Australia, and West Indies respectively. He surpassed all levels of greatness guiding India to victory in 2 of the 3 matches singlehandedly. He also displayed fantastic athleticism in the field and was the only silver lining in the Indian batting lineup. (Photo Source: Associated Press) Experts might have lost count on how many times, Raina has been a victim of short balls. With a tally of just 41 runs in 4 matches, Raina was nowhere near his best throughout the tournament. He bowled well and also picked wickets but struggled with the bat. He will have to regain his lost touch with the bat before it’s too late. Yuvraj Singh – 5/10: Yuvraj Singh. (Photo Source: BCCI) Yuvraj Singh had to leave the tournament midway after an ankle injury. Though stats might not suggest positives about him in the WT20, he played 2 important innings against Pakistan and Australia. He batted with maturity and saved his wicket, leaving the lofting skills to Kohli. Overall, it was not a good tournament for him, but considering the top order form, he played some crucial knocks. MS Dhoni – 8/10: Indian skipper MS Dhoni. (Photo Source: BCCI) MS Dhoni was a crusader in all departments. His captaincy during the Bangladesh game or against Australia was highly commendable. He effected some brilliant stumpings and a runout. Throughout the tournament, MSD showed remarkable fitness. The running between the wickets was quite representative of his prowess. He supported Kohli well while batting at number four and sometimes lower. Hardik Pandya – 5/10: Hardik Pandya. (Photo Source: BCCI) There was no doubt that Pandya was one of the most exceptional fielders for India, but he seemed a raw talent when it came to batting and bowling. While he didn’t get ample chances to prove his mettle with the bat, he was quite inconsistent with his bowling lengths despite taking wickets. The no ball cost India badly and brought his inexperience to showcase. His economy rate was above 10 adding more blemish to his figures. Ravindra Jadeja – 6/10: Ravindra Jadeja. (© IDI via Getty Images) He wasn’t as outstanding as a bowler but played his part well. Jadeja was exceptional against Bangladesh but was hit all over the park during the semi-finals. In a pitch that didn’t assist turn, Jadeja didn’t quite bowl well and the West Indian batsmen gladly took him to the cleaners. He was definitely the finest fielder during the WT20 for India. Ravichandran Ashwin – 5/10: Ravichandran Ashwin. (Photo Source: BCCI) He kept oscillating in the tournament. While he was sensational against Bangladesh and Pakistan, he bowled some loose deliveries vs Australia and New Zealand, thus ended up conceding runs. He couldn’t quite maintain his foot behind the line in the last match which cost India badly. His fielding display was also far from impressive. (Photo Source: BCCI) While Jasprit Bumrah was not quite effective with the new ball, he was Dhoni’s lethal weapon during the death overs. His slingy action made it difficult for the batsmen to pick him. Bumrah’s Yorkers often found the timber and right through the tournament he got India crucial wickets. His fielding was a drawback but he improved it well with some good stops in the semi-final and a diving catch, unfortunately off a no ball. Ashish Nehra – 9/10: Indian cricketer Ashish Nehra. He bowled at good lengths consistently, picked wickets and was the most economical pacer in the tournament. Ashish Nehra kept giving valuable inputs to youngsters like Bumrah and Pandya which helped them be more efficient.
