India as a cricketing country has several things to be proud of, the crazy following, the team’s success and even the number of ICC approved international venues it boasts of. There are a total of 52 international cricket venues in the country and the second best is England with 23 with a gap of 29 stadiums. Another addition to that list will be the world’s largest cricket stadium that is being constructed in Motera.
The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) has been working on it since January 2017 and very recently Parimal Nathwani vice-president of the GCA shared an update on the progress. It is one of the largest corporations in India, L&T, which has the responsibility of constructing the stadium.
Largest capacity of 1.10 lakhs
The expected cost of the stadium will be around Rs 700 crore and when it is ready for a game of cricket, the ground will be able to host 1.10 lakh fans. With that, it will take the crown for the largest capacity beating the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.
“The construction work is going on in full swing as per the schedule and we expect the stadium to be ready within the stipulated time period. The stadium will add one more attraction to Ahmedabad,” Nathwani had said.
The ground is spread over approximately 63 acres of land. Along with the playing area, it will have three practice grounds and an indoor cricket academy, an Olympic-size swimming pool and a Clubhouse. The old Motera stadium in Ahmedabad named after Sardar Patel hosted 12 Tests, 23 ODIs and 1 T20I. It had a capacity of 54,000 and the new stadium with double the capacity is expected to be ready in 2019.
Nathwani who visited the construction site shared images and mentioned that the stadium once ready will become the pride of the country.
He wrote- “World’s Largest Cricket Stadium, larger than #Melbourne, is under construction at #Motera in #Ahmedabad,#Gujarat. Once completed the dream project of #GujaratCricketAssociation will become pride of entire India. Sharing glimpses of construction work under way.”
