The morning session of the third day’s play in the final of the ICC World Test Championship didn’t exactly go in favor of the Indian team. After being 146 for 3 at the start of the day’s play, India slipped to 211 for 7 at the time when lunch was called. However, there were some highlights of that one session, one of which was Ravichandran Ashwin’s batting.

The Tamil Nadu off-spinner walked out to bat after Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for 49 with India at a score of 182 for 6. With the ball swinging and Niel Wagner in his full flow, the conditions were not the easiest to bat, to say the least. However, Ashwin managed to score some crucial runs for India while his wife, Prithi Ashwin Narayanan quietly sat back and watched her husband bat from the balcony of her room at the Hilton Hotel.

Ashwin dismissed for a well-made 22 by Tim Southee

She is staying with the rest of the family members of the Indian contingent at the hotel which is situated inside the stadium. She was seen posting updates on social media of the weather at the Hampshire Bowl since the eve of the final of the ICC World Test Championship. Once Ashwin got out, she also posted a tweet to express her disappointment. She tweeted, ‘Ayyo’, which is an expression used in South India, similar to ‘Oh Jesus’ or ‘Oh Lord’ in the English language.

Before Ashwin got out, he played an amazing cameo which had a full range of shots that we have seen him play before. His knock of 22 runs came off just 27 balls and put the pressure on the New Zealand bowlers slightly. From the 24 runs of his partnership with Jadeja, he scored most of them while trying to force the Kiwi bowlers into a bit of pressure.

Having said that, his entertaining cameo was ended by Tim Southee who bowled a beautiful pitched-up delivery, which swung sharply away from him. As Ashwin went for an adventurous cover drive, the ball swung a bit more than he would have expected and got the outside edge of his bat. The ball carried to the slips, where it was caught by Tom Latham.
