South Africa was placed in the Group B along with India, Pakistan and West Indies and finished second in the group. Out of the six matches, they won four matches and lost only to India and Pakistan. They advanced to the semi-final after pounding Sri Lanka in the quarter-final to set the clash with New Zealand for the spot in the finals.

This was the most breathtaking ODI they played this year. Rain interrupted and New Zealand’s task became tougher as the target was revised to 298 off 43 overs. South Africa batted first and posted 281 runs. In reply, New Zealand began well but Dale Steyn & Co. kept the competition on. However, Grant Elliot’s heroics stole the show and the Black Caps won the match in the last over eliminating South Africa from the tournament. Hearts were shattered after watching AB de Villiers shed tears.
