'You can only judge yourself if you beat the best' - Justin Langer wants to defeat India in India

On Friday, ICC released their latest Test team rankings in which Australia reclaimed their top spot leaving Team India behind with two points. After taking the number 1 position, the head coach of Australia, Justin Langer looked pretty happy. But, at the same time, he also opened up about his ultimate goal.

India lost a few crucial points after losing to New Zealand earlier this year in the Test series. But that wasn’t the main reason behind them coming down to number three. ICC announced the annual rankings which considered the results of the matches since May 2017. And the matches which team India or any team won in the 2016-2017 season didn’t carry weightage anymore.

This led to India coming down to 114 points behind Australia and New Zealand who respectively have 116 and 115 points to their name.

Justin Langer’s ultimate goal is still the same

Justin Langer took the charge of the Australia cricket team after Darren Lehmann resigned post the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. The 49-year-old worked quite hard in the last couple of years and has managed to bring the best out of his team. Australia were struggling a lot after their two main players David Warner and Steve Smith were handed with a 12-month ban. There is no doubt over the fact that he took his team from Ashes to Glory.

However, it looks like Justin Langer is still more hungry and wants to achieve his ultimate goal of defeating Team India in their own country. In a recent interview, Langer said that his team is focussed on winning the ongoing ICC Test Championship. But, he also added the fact that their ultimate goal is to defeat the Virat Kohli-led side in a Test series in their own backyard.

He recited the fact that to be one the best in the game they need to defeat the best. As per him, they have some tough competitors waiting down the line in the future. “Certainly a goal for us has been the World Test Championship … but ultimately, we have to beat India in India and we’ve got to beat them when they come back (to Australia).

“You can only judge yourself as being the best if you beat the best and we’ve got some really tough opposition to come,” Langer told Cricket.com.au.
