Indian sensation Yuvraj Singh became the heartthrob of the nation after hitting six sixes in a single over against Stuart Broad in 2007. He achieved the rare feat against England during the inaugural edition of World T20 in South Africa. Ten years down the line the memories of those gigantic hits are still fresh not only in the minds of fans but also of the man himself. The match was a must-win game for India in the super sixes and they won it courtesy his superhuman effort.

Broad who bore the brunt of his merciless hitting was new to the international arena then and now he is the prime bowler for his side albeit in the longest format of the game. Yuvraj too has been through a lot in the meantime and after making frequent comebacks to the national side is again striving hard for a place. He was overlooked by the selectors for the ODI series against Sri Lanka and Australia. But it remains to be seen if he is picked for the home series against New Zealand next month.

Yuvraj explains the scenario

In a candid interview with Gaurav Kapur, the southpaw himself cleared the air that the six sixes had nothing to do with Andrew Flintoff sledging him. He explained that it was his day and so he could hit those shots. “I can only tell you my version of the story. I was hit for 5 sixes. ..And that day whatever happened with Flintoff, he (Broad) bowled well, I hit good shots,” he said.

He also explained that the people rumoured about him hitting sixes as his response to Flintoff. “People said that Flintoff said something and that’s why Yuvraj hit 6 sixes. Even if he hadn’t said that I feel that on that day I would have hit those sixes because it was my day. Yeah, the way I was hitting the ball. There are some days when you know actually, what’s going to happen,” he continued.

Yuvi opined that the experience of being hit for 5 sixes by Dimitri Mascarenhas earlier helped him in hitting Broad for 6 sixes. “I got hit so I know how the pressure is. So I tapped on the pressure. I got hit for 3 sixes and Mascarenhas knew I was going to bowl faster. So he was waiting for that fast ball. So he hit me in the same rhythm. I knew that Broad won’t aim for anything but a yorker because he was under pressure. I think that was the reason of hitting 6 balls in six different directions,” he explained the whole scenario candidly.
