Zimbabwe Cricket today announced the Zimbabwe squad for the ICC World T20 2016 to be played in India, in March-April. Hamilton Masakadza who recently blasted the second highest T20 score with an unbeaten 162 for the Mountaineers against Mashonaland Eagles in the Domestic Twenty20 Competition will lead the Zimbabwe team in the World T20.
A surprise inclusion in the squad was fast bowler Tendai Chatara who wasn’t a part of the team for over a year after last featuring during the World Cup 2015 and was out with an injury since then. Regular opener Chamu Chibhabha hasn’t been included in the squad. The selectors excluded Taurai Muzarabani and Brian Vitori as well and added Chatara and Panyangara instead.
The Zimbabwean pace attack will feature Chatara, Panyangara, Luke Jongwe and Neville Madziva. Since the wickets in India are expected to be slow and assist the slower bowlers, the selectors have included Graeme Cremer, Tendai Chisoro and Wellington Masakadza in the squad to give the team enough firepower in the spin department. They also have Sikandar Raza and Sean Williams as part-time spin bowling options in the squad.
The selectors have tried to compile the best squad from the players available ahead of them and will hope the team manages, at least, a few wins in the mega event. Zimbabwe haven’t been in any sort of form of late and have lost back to back series against Afghanistan and Bangladesh; teams they were considered to have the caliber to beat.
