With the cricketing scene in the country in shambles, the Zimbabwe Cricket Board has announced its intention to rope in former South African opening batsman Gary Kirsten as the captain of their cricket team.

The 48-year old’s reputation precedes him as he has been highly successful in his international coaching stints with both India and South Africa. In recent times, however, Kirsten has been running his academy and spending more time with his family as he had promised when he stepped away from the coaching roles.

Zimbabwe Cricket has been in a downward spiral for the last few years. They have seldom won matches and have failed to reprise the great Zimbabwean cricket team of yesteryear including the likes of Heath Streak, Andy Flower, Andy Blignaut, and Alistair Campbell. As things stand, Zimbabwe was thrashed out of sight by an Indian side that had many a new faces. They subsequently lost the following Test series against New Zealand with the matches concluding much ahead of schedule.

However, the fact of the matter remains that they need a better coaching staff. Former South African players Lance Klusener and Makhaya Ntini were appointed on an interim basis. With Zulu Klusener leaving to join up with the Tamil Nadu Premier League, it is clear that that Ntini must fill in his shoes for a stipulated amount of time. Sure enough, Ntini is the one who is serving as the head coach at the moment.

Gary Kirsten was roped into the Indian coaching role when former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar threw his name into the ring. At the time, the Indians were on a terrible losing streak with controversies flowing from different places involving Sourav Ganguly and Greg Chappell. With the former Australia skipper sacked from his position, the Indians turned their heads to Kirsten.

The former Protean opener led the Indians to perhaps their best ever period in Indian cricketing history as they were ranked number one in the Test championship and won the 2011 edition of the World Cup.
